Great to see you here. :-)

Jo, I'm with you there. You always sense a 'but' and that just smashes any positive feeling you had.

An important issue is not to slag people off - in a work environment as much as in reviewing fiction, movies, manuscripts, etc. Make sure to highlight the points that (in your opinion) need changing, but in a manner that allows the other person to think of alternative ways rather than get frustrated.Cathie Dunnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08537946350336674340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2366670135847123894.post-63360056957929789752012-05-03T23:21:20.462+02:002012-05-03T23:21:20.462+02:00Catherine, you are absolutely right. "I appreciate your effort, BUT ..." And the but really means the person did NOT appreciate your effort.

Maybe try reversing it? When you do have something good to say -- and you mean it -- try the good part afterwards. "Cindy, have you ever thought of wearing a boat neck collar? With your figure, it would be sensational! Especially in that gorgeous shade of blue you're wearing!"Johttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01245225023115543081noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2366670135847123894.post-75998783046151331522012-05-03T21:41:12.709+02:002012-05-03T21:41:12.709+02:00Jo...I enjoyed your post today. I have mixed feelings when it comes to your suggestion of combining good with the bad. People tend to do this to "soften" the blow. I think this works with friends, but I try not to do it with employees. I believe in addressing both good things and bad things quickly. I give compliments to my staff regularly when I observe them doing something well. The compliments stand by themselves. I also address "negative" things quickly, such as your example of lateness. I try not to muddy the corrective feedback with something positive. Although in more social or friendly interactions, I do that regularly. It's easier to say to a friend, "Gee, I love that color on you, but I'm not sure the style of that blouse is flattering for your figure."Catherine Leehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14998035693869891918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2366670135847123894.post-38690342485188340732012-05-03T20:16:22.207+02:002012-05-03T20:16:22.207+02:00I love the comment about saying something nice, an...I love the comment about saying something nice, and then mentioning the section you would change.
