Review: The Return of the Disappearing Duke by Lara Temple
I’m delighted to share my review of another of Lara Temple’s intriguing historical romance novels. Today, it’s of The Return of the Disappearing Duke. My thanks goes to Rachel’s Random Resources for a copy.
Happy Publication Day to Lara Temple!
As in The Lord's Inconvenient Vow, we’re straight into the action beneath the hot African sun.
When Cleopatra Osbourne, dressed as a boy, runs into the lodgings of Rafe Grey to escape men chasing after her, she doesn’t immediately expect to find a man who agrees to take her to Cairo in search of her brother. What she expects even less is the attraction she feels towards this scarred, cynical man!
To escape the rogues following her, she remains in disguise. As they travel through the desert, neither can deny that they are drawn to each other. Two misfits on the fringes of society.
What Cleopatra doesn’t know is that Rafe is not just the mercenary he makes out to be.
He has a dukedom waiting for him in England following his father’s death, but he's reluctant to claim it. He ran away after his father beat him, joined the army, and never returned. Now young Cleopatra is yet another opportunity to delay the inevitable.
This latest story involving a member of the Edgerton family is a fast-paced romantic romp. Ancient Egyptian temples, a camel ride across the Sahara, a hot steamy bath (!), and a stormy crossing in the Mediterranean with a rogue captain all feature in the perfect adventure.
The characters are endearing in their flaws – Rafe’s reluctance to return home and Cleo’s unusual background with a father dealing in dubious antiques. They’re not ordinary people, which gives them an edge.
The descriptions of the locations are, as always, vibrant and realistic. You could easily imagine their journey as they face their internal and external conflicts.
Highly recommended!

A scarred mercenary…Or the Disappearing Duke of Greybourne?
Rafe has spent years running from his true identity. He’s a lone wolf, living far from aristocratic England and his violent father. Then unconventional Cleopatra Osbourne requests his protection as she crosses the Egyptian desert. In Cleo he discovers a fellow outcast—and a fierce desire!
Cleo must return to London, and here lies Rafe’s dilemma—because following his heart means claiming the title he’s avoided for so long!
